While free will is a notoriously difficult concept to define (even Lewis doesn’t try to do so in The Screwtape Letters), one useful “test” of free will was proposed by the important Christian thinker Saint Augustine: if a being commits a wrongful act, the act can only be considered a “sin” if the being, placed under identical circumstances, could have behaved any other way. In Christian theology, humans are unique insofar as they have free will. Humanity’s imperfection, Screwtape maintains, is a consequence of its freedom. God has created humans to be deeply flawed-they have imperfect knowledge of the world and of themselves, they are foolish and irrational, and they often disrespect God. ![]() Early on in The Screwtape Letters, Screwtape explains the challenges that human beings face in their lives. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s a testament to the hold of belief systems, even when one no longer believes. With thick black lines and contemplative, wordless sequences, Campbell effectively conveys both Lauren’s turmoil and the harm done by a religion set on turning youthful passion into intolerance. The church blames her subsequent disappearance on Wicca and a sharp turn in the plot is genuinely shocking. As the pastor preaches about how girls must fend off weak, lustful boys, Mariah tries to do just that, to no avail, one night at the local reservoir. Yet, amid sermons against same-sex marriage and swirling rumors about her, Lauren breaks up with Mariah. Certainly, Lauren finds Mariah much more appealing than the church boy who wants to get married and “have a kid every nine months,” or the vibe at the youth ministry rave (“Jesus Christ was the first raver”). After Lauren is paired with classmate Mariah-rumored to be a witch-for a school project on evolution, the two quickly become constant companions: talking, making out, and engaging in some light shoplifting. While it's very short and sweet and doesn't have a whole lot of dialogue, it says a lot in the moments where the characters are silent. ![]() Fifteen-year-old Lauren appears no more swayed by her pastor’s warnings about remaining “a pure bride of Christ” than his own disaffected, heavily pregnant daughter. Rave is a unique coming-of-age graphic novel that explores themes that a lot of teens (and adults) can relate to: religious trauma, sexuality, friendship, pain, resentment, and loss. Unfolding at the intersection of budding sexuality and evangelical Christianity, this gripping graphic novel from Campbell (XTC69) depicts a quietly tragic coming-of-age. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wong Wing worked as a coolie near the Man Mo Temple in Sheung Wan and he started selling preserved fruits on the street in the neighborhood in his free time to augment his income. ![]() ![]() Wong Wing Kee was founded in 1901 by Wong Wing (王榮), a native of Dongguan who also went by the name of Wong Koon-nam (王冠南). Something that is noticeable by the journey he believes he takes after he is hung by the Federal troops. If anything Farquhar is driven by his desire to escape. They too will try and figure out a way to escape and in turn not accept their fate. This may be significant as Bierce could be using the element of time to suggest that should an individual find themselves in a position similar to Farquhar. As his watch is ticking he is thinking of being able to free himself before he is hung. What is interesting about Farquhar’s position is that he doesn’t give up the hope of not being hung. The story itself is set during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and Farquhar has been captured by Federal troops and is about to be hanged. Narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator the reader realises from the beginning of the story that Bierce through the setting of the story may be exploring the theme of conflict. In An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce we have the theme of conflict, time, freedom, acceptance, escape, commitment, control and reality. ![]() ![]() So, the endgame has begun and the fate of Queen Kelsea – and the Tearling itself – will be revealed… But the Mace will not rest until he and his men rescue their sovereign from her prison in Mortmesne. ![]() To protect her people from such a devastating invasion, Kelsea did the unthinkable – naming the Mace, the trusted head of her personal guards, Regent in her place, she surrendered herself and her magical sapphires to her enemy.
